Talli Osborne, 44, took seven years to finally be able to drive a car that met all her needs. Born without arms and with short legs, Osborne now drives a Mini Cooper worth nearly $100,000.
In an interview with CBC, she shared her journey. “If you really want to achieve something, you can do it, no matter what the obstacle,” said Osborne.
She bought the used car and didn’t have the money for the modifications. This all happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite her mother’s suggestion, Osborne continued to pay for the car.
After receiving a call from the War Amps’ Child Amputee Program, she was able to get financial support to cover the modification costs. “I was almost in tears,” she said.
The car is equipped with a five-inch custom steering wheel, extended pedals, and a touchscreen for managing signals and controls.
Osborne also had to get her driver’s license, which she says was harder due to people’s prejudices. “I was born this way, and nothing will change. It was a bit degrading for me because I’m not sick. It felt so repulsive,” she revealed.
She is now looking forward to visiting friends in California. “This is a very positive step towards a level of independence and freedom that many people with disabilities don’t get a chance to experience,” said her younger sister, Mir.
