Most brides would pay anything to get their dream dress for their wedding day, but American Jillian Lynch didn’t think twice about looking for the perfect gown in a thrift store.
32-year-old Lynch has always enjoyed thrift shopping, and when she and her partner decided to get married, she knew she didn’t want a traditional wedding dress, but a simple white dress that matched her style.
Speaking to Business Insider, Lynch explained how she found her ideal dress: “I just started looking for dresses, not wedding dresses, but simple white dresses,” she said. “I didn’t want anything too formal.”
After four days of searching through thrift stores, Lynch finally found the dress she had imagined for her wedding day: a design by Camilla Coelho, which typically costs around $220, but which the thrifty bride bought for just $3.75.
With the dress selected, Lynch spent $110 on alterations to make it fit just the way she wanted, and also bought a pair of shoes at a thrift store for only $8.
Before deciding on the dress, Lynch posted a video on TikTok wearing it, and the clip quickly accumulated over two million views and thousands of comments from viewers encouraging her to wear the thrifted dress for her wedding.
“Hearing the feedback on TikTok that it looked like it was made for me, I think that really influenced me,” she said. “After I made that TikTok, I fell more in love with it every time I tried it on. I felt so beautiful in it.”
And just as her followers inspired Lynch, her relaxed approach to the wedding also charmed TikTok users: “Honestly, brides pay thousands of dollars to look as good in a white dress as you do. I think you’re killing it, and it’s perfect,” one person commented. “I want to do this!” said another.
