American journalist Emily Matson became the headline this week following the news of her death. The WICU-TV presenter died after being hit by a train.

Emily Matson, a popular and award-winning news anchor and reporter for WICU-TV in Erie, PA, for nearly two decades, died. She was 42 years old.

Lilly Broadcasting, the NBC affiliate, confirmed her death on December 11th, but did not provide further details.

According to TMZ, the Erie County Coroner’s Office concluded that the fatal incident was a suicide.

Matson began her career as an intern at WJET-TV in Erie in the early 2000s.

Moving to WICU, she first produced the station’s morning program for two years before landing an on-air reporter role.

“I was sad to leave the morning team, but excited when they offered me the reporter job I had been fighting for,” wrote Matson on her bio page.

“As a general reporter, I focused on the crime beat from my first day at work, and I love it! I feel like I am really making a difference in the Erie community, meeting new people, and telling stories that affect everyone every day.”

She co-anchored WICU’s 7 PM and 11 PM news and was a two-time winner of the Outstanding Spot News Award from the Pennsylvania Broadcasters Association.
