Swiss Church Installs AI-Controlled Jesus Hologram in Its Confessional (Freepik)
A church in Lucerne, Switzerland, has installed an AI-generated Jesus hologram to hear confessions, sparking mixed reactions on social media.
Called “Deus in Machina,” the experimental project was placed in the St. Peter’s Chapel, the oldest in the city. Developed by experts from the Center for Immersive Realities at Hochschule Luzern, in partnership with a local theologian, the hologram uses sacred scriptures and theological texts to interact with the faithful in over 100 languages.
Positioned in one of the confessionals, the hologram greets users with a peace message and invites them to share their concerns.
According to the creators, their tests showed responses theologically aligned with the parish’s principles. However, the initiative received polarized opinions. Some users found the idea innovative, while others criticized it as potentially offensive or incompatible with religious teachings.
While some believe the proposal could modernize the religious experience, others expressed discomfort or humor at the use of technology in such a traditional setting.
