Jae’lynn Chaney, a body-positive plus-size influencer, has made new demands for U.S. airlines to create larger seats for overweight people.
In a recent TikTok video, she stated that she believes it’s absurd that overweight people have to “pay twice for the same accommodation that anyone else gets with just one ticket.”
“It’s not about giving more to overweight people, but meeting basic needs,” Chaney says in the video. She often discusses the issue that airplane seats are not big enough to provide comfort for plus-size people during flights.
She then mentioned that in Canadian airlines, there has been a “one person, one fare” policy since 2008, which allows people to buy two seats for the price of one if they present medical documents justifying their need before the flight.
“Why do other countries like Canada recognize this as a basic need, but here in the U.S., airlines are still profiting from our discomfort? It’s time they stop profiting off our bodies and start treating everyone fairly.”
“And let’s not forget, airline seats keep getting smaller every year, making it even harder for people who already need extra space,” reflected the influencer, who received a wave of criticism in the comments.
“If you take up two seats, no one else can buy a ticket to sit there, so you have to pay for both,” said one person. “If you’re using two seats, shouldn’t you pay for two seats?” questioned another. “If I’m big enough to need two seats, it will be my wake-up call,” quipped another.
