An ophthalmologist has issued an important warning to those who go to bed without removing their makeup. Dr. Gurleen Dhanoa often shares tips on eye health and in one of her recent posts, she talked about the dangers of sleeping with waterproof mascara.

Known on TikTok and Instagram as eyestheticsofficial, the doctor shocked her followers by showing what can happen to those who have the habit of sleeping with this type of makeup.

“If you sleep with your waterproof mascara, flip your eyelids, andI challenge you,” she says in her video.

After challenging her followers, the doctor shows a photo showing the inside of someone’s eyelid, covered with small black spots that look like mold, as if the mascara had seeped through the skin.

The photo appears to have been taken from an article published in Ophthalmology, a journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and reported by BuzzFeed News in 2018.

According to the study, a 50-year-old Australian woman developed a severe eye disease after “25 years of heavy mascara use without proper removal before bedtime.”

The publication did not specify what type of mascara the unidentified woman used, but it is believed that the “rare” condition may be worsened by the continuous use of waterproof mascara, as it is generally the hardest type to remove.
