Larissa Moraes de Carvalho, a young resident in Juiz de Fora (MG), has been in a vegetative state since March 2023, after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest resulting from orthognathic surgery.

The procedure, performed at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia, aimed to correct misalignments in the jaw and maxilla, recommended by dentists since her childhood.

Immediately after the operation, Larissa experienced complications and lost consciousness, without regaining it since then. After a year of hospitalization, the student now receives care at home, requiring continuous assistance, including daily physiotherapy and speech therapy, feeding, and medication through a feeding tube.

Ricardo Carvalho, Larissa’s father, recounted to the G1 website, recalling the day of the surgery. “We knew it would be a long surgery, with general anesthesia, but even as we were waiting, I didn’t think of horrible things.

The Santa Casa de Misericórdia, the surgeon, and the anesthetist involved in the case are under investigation by the Civil Police. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais, under the guidance of prosecutor Jorge Tobias de Souza, initiated a criminal investigation in September 2023 to ascertain the circumstances that led to Larissa’s current condition.

According to the medical record, Larissa left the post-anesthesia recovery room at 5:45 p.m. and was transferred to a hospital room. By 6:02 p.m., she was already in cardiac arrest. The 17-minute interval between her departure from recovery and arrival in the room is one of the focal points of the investigation, as no problems were reported during this period.

Larissa remained in the Intensive Care Unit for a month before being transferred to a hospital room, where she stayed until March of this year. Since then, she has been treated at home, under conditions requiring constant intensive care, including the permanent use of diapers.
