American Chris Clark became a millionaire after selling the domain pizza.com at an auction in 2008.
According to the portal UNILAD, Clark registered the domain when the internet was still in its early days. He paid a $20 annual fee to keep the site online. It was a simple website with ads that directed users to other companies.
Clark got the idea to sell pizza.com after hearing about someone who made $3 million by selling the vodka.com domain.
“I thought, ‘Why not try and see what the level of interest is? If someone is willing to pay that much for vodka.com, maybe there’s more interest in pizza.com,’” he said in an interview with the BBC.
The first offer Clark received was $100 in 2006. After a week, the offer rose to $2.6 million. The domain was sold in 2008 for an undisclosed multimillion-dollar sum.
Despite making a small fortune, Clark told the Baltimore Sun that he regrets not registering more domains in the early days of the internet.
