Johnny Kyunghwo, a British-Korean food and travel blogger, decided to capture the moment he tried a controversial dish for the first time when he went on a culinary tour in Haenam, South Korea.

In a video in partnership with content creator Austin Givens, from the Eat What is Given YouTube channel, Kyunghwo went to a restaurant specializing in chickens and tried the dish chicken sashimi, which he nicknamed “basically raw chicken.”
His review was as follows: “The meat didn’t have much flavor, so most of the taste came from sesame oil and the seeds with which the raw chicken was covered, but the texture was almost like that of raw fish. Not slippery. It was firm but still very easy to chew.”

Kyunghwo, who has 1.1 million followers on TikTok and 605,000 subscribers on YouTube, left viewers shocked and had to reassure people in the comments that he was fine.

Chef Eugene Lee, based in Brisbane, previously stated to SBS Food that there is “an art to preparing raw chicken,” meaning that chicken sashimi is made precisely and, for this reason, requires careful and skilled preparation. “Most of the meat actually comes from the inner part of the chicken breast, closer to the soft bone. This is the safest part and less prone to contamination by microbes,” he said.
