Elon Musk has sparked controversy by claiming in an interview that his transgender child, Vivian Jenna Wilson, was “killed by the woke mental virus.”
Musk claims he was misled into giving consent for puberty blockers. The billionaire now criticizes the culture that allows gender reassignment surgeries, describing the process as “incredibly malign” and stating that the blockers are actually sterilization medications.
“I was basically tricked into signing documents for one of my older children […] It’s incredibly malign […] My child is dead, dead from the woke mental virus. […] I vowed to destroy the woke virus after this… and we are making some progress.”

Vivian, one of Musk’s six children with his ex-wife Justine Wilson, gained attention in 2022 when she asked a California court to change her name and gender, as well as adopt her mother’s surname to distance herself from her famous father.
It’s worth noting that “woke” has currently become synonymous with liberal or left-leaning policies that advocate for issues such as racial and social equality, feminism, the LGBTQIA+ movement, environmental activism, and more. However, when the term is used pejoratively, often by the far right, it takes on an opposing meaning, asserting that “woke culture,” “woke ideology,” or the “woke mental virus” represents a threat to “family values” and democracy.
