Dr. Ahmed Ezzat, a physician from the National Health Service in the United Kingdom, shared a video on TikTok to alert users of e-cigarettes to health risks.

“Who would have imagined that in the 1920s to 1940s, doctors on every billboard were trying to promote cigarette consumption by claiming, along with tobacco companies, that smoking cured or treated asthma and shortness of breath,” he began.

“If someone were to say that now, it would be absolutely ridiculous. So we see history repeating itself,” said the doctor, who also explained that there are many parallels between vapes and cigarettes.

“Just because there isn’t yet enough evidence to prove it’s harmful doesn’t mean there isn’t any harm. They can be very harmful, and the effects will only be known in 20 or 30 years,” Ezzat added.

“People are buying these very cheap, colorful vapes that I see at every bus stop. They are children coming from school. These flavors normalize it, instead of someone buying, let’s say, gum or chocolate, they buy a vape that is perceived as cool,” he lamented.

The doctor, who uses his social media platforms to discourage young people from using e-cigarettes, explained that the National Health Service in the UK only recommends the use of vapes in very specific cases.

“The NHS recommends [the use of e-cigarettes] under control for those trying to quit smoking and can’t. [For] individuals addicted to smoking, [the use of e-cigarettes is] regulated, in consultation with a doctor,” Ezzat warned.
