Singer Demi Lovato opened up to her doctor Charlie Shaffer about her mental health and medical treatment.

Demi Lovato, 31, told her doctor Charlie Shaffer that she felt “defeated” every time she returned for medical treatment. Lovato has been in treatment five times already, she revealed.

“I think the glimmer of hope came when I started to work, follow a program, or talk with my treatment team and build relationships, when I started to find joy and the little things in life”, she said to Shaffer.

She also shared about being fearful of medication but knew what she needed to do. “I thought ‘what am I doing wrong?’ I felt defeated. But then, when all the main pieces started to fit together like a perfect puzzle, I began to see the light again”, she recounted.

In her latest treatment, Demi Lovato realized that her mental health doesn’t define her identity. “It’s just a part of what makes me, which means my struggles have shaped me into the ceramic you see today, but it never became my identity since then”.
