A court in Spain has issued a sentence condemning Daniel Alves, former Barcelona and Brazil national team player, to four and a half years in prison for the crime of rape that occurred in a Barcelona nightclub.

The incident took place in the early hours of December 31, 2022, and since then, Alves has consistently denied the allegations.
Dani Alves, 40 years old, known as one of the most decorated football players in history, faced trial after being accused of taking a woman to the bathroom in a VIP area of the nightclub. Alves argued in his defense that the woman had the freedom to leave “if she wanted.” However, the court rejected this argument, concluding that the victim did not give her consent.

In addition to the victim’s testimony, the court highlighted that there were other pieces of evidence that corroborated the occurrence of the crime. Alves’ lawyer had requested his client’s acquittal and stated that the former player could appeal the sentence.
