In the documentary “Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe“, showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), he revealed that he was born with glaucoma but was able to see until he was 12. However, during his teenage years, Bocelli suffered an accident while playing soccer, which resulted in his total loss of vision.

At the age of 7, Bocelli was admitted to a school for children with visual impairments after struggling in regular educational institutions. The total loss of vision occurred in this environment, 5 years later:

“One day while playing soccer, I was the goalkeeper. I have no idea why, I had never played in goal before. And I would never be able to be the goalkeeper again. The ball hit me right in the face. From that blow, came a hemorrhage, and the rest is history.”

The tenor also shared some of his memories of the world he saw before the accident, reflecting on how close-up vision and colors were etched in his memory.
