Ten years ago, after a serious motorcycle accident, Austrian chef Peter Lammer lost 80% of the movement in his legs, and thanks to the creativity of a close friend, he was able to return to the kitchen and resume his professional activity.

After the accident, recovery, and extensive physical therapy, Chef Lammer regained only minimal control over his legs and had to face the uncertainty of whether he could continue working in a kitchen.

But Bernhard Tichy, a close friend of Lammer, seeing the chef struggling to get his life back, decided to draw inspiration from his own work to create a device to help his friend cook.

Tichy, who ran a zipline course, had a good understanding of suspension movement, and together with Lammer, he created a kind of floating stool, named ‘Standing Ovation‘.

The invention by the chef and his friend allows people with disabilities to sit comfortably on a bicycle seat, which is attached to a pole with a large hook at its end.

The C-shaped metal hook is secured by carabiners to a ceiling rail and slides along it; this allows the chef to ‘float’ through the kitchen while keeping his hands free to chop, cut, and stir pots without difficulty.

To Reuters, Lammer revealed that no one believed he could become a chef again, but they were all wrong: “All the experts said I would never be able to do a standing job again,” he declared, directly from his restaurant Johanneskeller, in Salzburg.
