Police reported that Lee was found unconscious inside a car in a park in Seoul, alongside charcoal briquettes, a common method of suicide in South Korea.

Born in 1975, Lee was a prominent figure in South Korean cinema. His wife, concerned after finding a suicide note he left at home, contacted the police, who promptly discovered the actor was already deceased.

Lee’s death occurs amidst controversy. He was being investigated for alleged use of illegal drugs, a severely punished crime in South Korea. The actor was questioned by the police several times, including a grueling 19-hour interrogation over the last weekend.

Lee claimed he was coerced into drug use by a bar receptionist who then attempted to blackmail him. This aspect of the investigation was closely followed by local media, increasing pressure on the actor.

Known for his role as the patriarch of a wealthy family in the acclaimed “Parasite” from 2019, Lee Sun-kyun also stood out in other South Korean films such as “Helpless” (2012) and “All About My Wife” (2014). Additionally, he starred in Apple TV+’s first Korean original series, “Dr. Brain,” a science fiction thriller released in 2021.
