Model and wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, Carla Bruni, was questioned as a suspect in an alleged illegal campaign financing scheme for her husband in 2007.

The questioning took place on Thursday (25), according to AFP. Sarkozy is said to have received millions of euros in briefcases sent by Muammar Gaddafi, the former Libyan prime minister, who was killed in 2011.

A Franco-Lebanese businessman, Ziad Takieddine, claimed he delivered the briefcases to the head of Sarkozy’s team. Carla Bruni was questioned to clarify why Takieddine made these claims.

There are suspicions that people close to Sarkozy may have asked the businessman to alter his account of the events. The former president was accused of witness tampering in 2023 and is set to stand trial in 2025.

Mimi Marchand, known as France’s “queen of paparazzi”, has also been indicted for possible involvement in the case. Bruni is suspected of acting as a bridge between those involved in the alleged scheme, as she deleted messages with Marchand on the day the paparazzi was indicted in 2021.
